At the request of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Canadian-funded IMPACT Justice is moving to prepare Sentencing Guidelines to be used to assist the judiciary in deciding the appropriate sentence for some criminal offences.
An initial meeting took place in Barbados on September 24th, 2016. In attendance were Hon. Justice C. Dennis Morrison, President of the Court of Appeal of Jamaica; Hon. Justice Trevor Ward, Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court; Mr. Jayde Jean, Judicial Assistant of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court; Prof. Velma Newton, IMPACT Justice Regional Project Director, and Charleen Walkes, Project Officer. The group discussed the development of sentencing guidelines and the areas in which they are needed.
This meeting was the first step in the process, which will also involve further consultation with members of the judiciary, government representatives, bar associations and civil society.
