BRIDGETOWN – August 8, 2022 – In 2021, the Canadian Government funded Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice) Project was asked by the Hon. Anil Nandlall, SC, MP, Attorney General of Guyana to assist with its law revision exercise aimed at updating bringing the Laws of Guyana up to date for the period 2010 to December 2021.
To set up the ground work for this exercise, IMPACT Justice in January 2022, funded the completion of an update of the West Indian Legislation Indexing Project (“WILIP”) Guyana Legislative Index to December 2021 and supplied copies of this index of legislation to the Government of Guyana so it could verify that all Laws of Guyana were included and could identify the Acts in need of consolidation and revision. By the end of January 2022, the Office of the Attorney General completed all of the preliminary reviews of the Acts of Guyana and submitted, along with copies of the Acts, a report on the status of each Act recommended for revision, reform and repeal. With these preliminary matters concluded, in February 2022, the Anguilla based Regional Law Revision Centre Inc. under an agreement with the IMPACT Justice Project and the Government of Guyana commenced work on the revision of the Acts of Guyana.
It is anticipated that over 100 Acts will be revised as a part of the exercise, which is expected to end early in the year 2023.
