Meeting with Attorney General Benjamin and Antigua’s Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs on Sexual Offences Act

ST. JOHN’S – On May 20th, 2019, Professor Velma Newton met with the Honourable Steadroy Benjamin and his team to discuss possible amendments to the Antigua and Barbuda Sexual Offences Act, 1995. The meeting entailed a review of the Act with a list of recommended amendments submitted by the Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening (JURIST) Project, the Guyana Sexual Offences Act, 2010 and the Jamaica Sexual Offences Act, 2009.

The meeting was productive and areas for proposed amendment include provisions dealing with rape, incest, serious indecency and the establishment of a sexual offenders registry.

IMPACT Justice looks forward to continuing its work with Attorney General Benjamin and the Government of Antigua.
